Growing up around and being one of the rappers to make rap music about issues that matter, Ice T is disappointed with the direction that most hip hop artists are taking their music. In a recent interview, the veteran rapper said “I want to see some little motherf**kers get together like a Public Enemy and give these fools a wake up call like, ‘F**k this jewelry and cars bulls**t,’ and bring it back to Armageddon! Don’t get it twisted – the people that are making music now, I’m not mad at them. People think I’m mad at pop music [but] I’m not. I’m just saying the conscious music is lacking. There’s no roots… Where are those kids that are gonna come out and really push the envelope? N.W.A did F**k tha Police, we were going hard, we were getting arrested. Now everybody is trying to stay in their nice little safe bubble and I miss the edgy music. That’s all I’m saying. Saying you sell drugs, that’s not edgy to me, let’s talk about some issues. Lupe Fiasco. Lupe Fiasco does it. I’ve listened to some of his stuff. He’s not afraid…” I actually agree with him on this one.
Beyonce is featured on the cover of the September 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK. The 29-year old R&B singer got to talk about some of her famous friends in the interview. When asked about her experience working with Lady Gaga, Beyonce said “She’s not afraid. I love that. She wanted me to do something crazy, and so I just rolled with it.” She also spoke about her blossoming friendship with Gwyneth Paltrow, saying “She pushes her boundaries all the time. You go to her house and she makes you feel like you never want to go home. She is what I strive to be one day.”

There have been some rumors going around that there’s some drama between Kanye West and Jay-Z and the tour in support of their collaborative album “Watch the Throne”. At first, word on the street was that the two rappers were fighting over creative differences on the tour’s design. Then, Jay-Z did an impromptu interview to deny the extent of the story. But now, the tour is being rescheduled. Instead of the September 22 kick off, the curtain will rise on October 29, citing high demand. I say these guys are masters of milking publicity. What do you think is the real deal?
When Alicia Keys first started seeing her now husband Swizz Beatz, there was some speculation that she had gotten involved with him before the rapper/producer had officially left his wife. The R&B singer has remained mum on these allegations for a long time but for some reason, Alicia decided to touch on the subject in a recent interview. Alicia said that she was never the homewrecker people painted her out to be, saying “We didn’t start seeing each other until months after they had separated. I was aware of all the false things that were being said about me it definitely hurt.” Alicia decided to stay quiet for a long time because of Swizz’s ex who fueled the rumors even more, saying “I was sure that if I engaged it would become back-and-forth like some sick entertainment, which goes against everything I believe and would have made things worse.” I respect her move on staying quiet though I don’t really find reason for her to talk about it now.
50 Cent recently had an interview for the April/May edition of Vibe Magazine. While the rapper’s music was surely a topic of conversation, 50 Cent took a considerable amount of time talking about two important ladies in his life this past year – Chelsea Handler and Ciara. Both relationships have been tumultuous, with his fling with Chelsea fizzling out and his constant Twitter feud with Ciara. Despite things going south in both relationships, he had nothing but an air of class when talking about them. I guess someone has learned the value of the phrase “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all!”
During a recent interview, Swizz Beatz announced that he has recorded a song called “Skyscrapers”. I know, it’s not that interesting. What’s interesting about the track is that the singer/producer actually collaborated with rapper Kanye West and U2’s lead singer Bono on it. The track will be featured on Swizz’s upcoming album “Haute Living”. I can see Swizz and Kanye collaborate but not Bono so I’m definitely interested to see how this one comes out. Do you think that the three of them made a good track or is just too weird a combo for you? I wish I could hear it soon.
It’s been two years since Chris Brown gave Rihanna a brutal assault before the Grammys but people don’t forget horrible things like that. In the Barbadian R&B/pop singer’s Rolling Stone magazine interview, she was asked to talk about the repercussions of that night on her life and her decision to lift the restraining order she had against him. Rihanna “That’s my decision…it doesn’t mean we’re getting married tomorrow. It doesn’t mean we’re gonna be in a relationship, or make up, or even talk ever again. It just means I didn’t want to object to the judge…What he did to me was a personal thing. It had nothing to do with his career. Saying [he can't perform at awards show] definitely made it difficult for him. We don’t have to talk again ever in my life. I just didn’t want to make it more difficult for him professionally.” And that ladies and gents is what you would call class.
Many were surprised to find out that several tracks, specifically collaborations between the King of Pop and will.i.am, on the new Michael Jackson will be omitted. Apparently, the rapper believes that those songs shouldn’t see the light of day because they weren’t “micro-Michael-managed” by Michael himself. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the Black Eyed Peas front man said “A couple of months before Michael died, he called me on the phone really upset. ‘Hey, it’s Michael. Somebody leaked one of these songs. Why would they do that? Who does that?’ I said, ‘What song, Mike?’ ‘Some song called ‘Hold My Hand.’ I swear to God I had this conversation with him…I knew this man and he was very critical about every single detail. He stood in the studio himself, mastering and mixing everything. How can you release a record without that Michael Jackson? It’s not Michael Jackson. I heard the song that’s on the Internet now ['Breaking News'] and I’m like, ‘That ain’t Mike.’ He wasn’t there to do his micro-Michael-managing that he did with ‘Thriller’ and ‘Billie Jean.’ It disgusts me.”
Kanye West has had a pretty rough two weeks. After his intense interview on the Today Show with Matt Lauer and then going on Twitter about his disappointment with the show’s decision to run clips of him interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the rapper cancelled his upcoming Today Show performance in protest against the show. Now, the media trainer Kanye hired to help him with the interview in the first place has quit. When Susie Arons was hired, she actually tried to get him to cancel the interview but Kanye decided to go ahead with it at the last minute. Unfortunately, the interview was an epic fail. Susie quit just days later.

Rihanna recently revealed in an interview that she wasn’t so fond of Russell Brand, who got married to Rihanna’s best friend Katy Perry last weekend, when she first met him. The Barbadian R&B singer said “I first met him when he was interviewing me on TV. I was sick and it was the worst interview I have ever done. I was throwing up in a bucket and a doctor gave me a shot in my butt. Nothing was funny to me. I thought it was the most stupid fucking interview I ever did in my fucking life. Why am I talking to this idiot? He made me want to throw up again. This is a stupid interview.” Imagine if Rihanna made it to that wedding and had that as her maid of honor speech. No worries though as Rihanna and Russell get along great now.
