Alicia Keys at the World Cup

It looks like the boys from the FIFA World Cup Kick-off Celebration have really got themselves quite the concert planned. Not only will Alicia Keys be there, but also Shakira and Black Eyed Peas. The concert will take place on the 10th of June in South Africa. Former soccer player Lucas Radebe said the following about the epic concert: “Music and sports are the lifeblood of African culture, so to combine those in this historic event will be a true celebration of Africa.” Right… nothing more traditional than having Shakira and the Black Eyed Peas singing for the nation… real African spirit right there and they managed to drag Alicia Keys into it too. Is this about football or the ticket sales because at this point it’s a bit hard to tell?

Jill Scott and Maxwell on Tour

Jill Scott and Maxwell are going on tour together in the US. Their concerts will kick off in Cleveland on May 21 and will be making stops in 20 cities with more dates to be announced for June. The R&B singers will be stopping in Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York. Both of them are incredible to see and hear live so if you’ve got the chance to catch them in concert, do so! I think they should even add more dates to their tour to give everyone a chance to catch them.

Mary J. Blige Does Led Zeppelin

Mary J. Blige has reportedly done two covers of Led Zeppelin songs for the international reissue of her album ‘Stronger with Each Tear’ which is due out on Monday. The singer recruited the likes of Travis Barker, Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai to collaborate with her on ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and had so much fun that she decided to cover ‘Whole Lotta Love’ too. Mary said “I did Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ — it’s crazy! I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I’m not going to say I’ve been to their concerts, but I’ve listened to their music since I was a child, and it’s always moved me, especially ‘Stairway to Heaven’, and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is just fun. I want y’all to hear it.”

Whitney Houston Ignores Critics

After critics and concert goers have complained that Whitney Houston’s tour in Australia is an absolute disaster, the singer’s publicist released a statement saying “Whitney is in great health and having a terrific time on her tour and with her fans. Her fans were dancing and singing along with her and Whitney appreciates their support.” However, fans have been voicing their opinion on the internet and it sounds like they disagree saying “She barely finished any of her songs and talked more than she sang while trying to catch a breath, as well as stopping in the middle of her songs to get a towel, reapply makeup” and “If her voice is shot, and she knows it, how dare she get up on stage and pretend it’s not.”

Peaches is No Superstar

Electronic rapper Peaches had planned a very special concert where she would be performing the music of the musical ‘Jesus Christ: Superstar’ as a one woman show in Berlin. However, the German right holders to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s shows refused to give her permission to perform the music. Peaches went on her Twitter to talk about the project saying “[They] claim that this project is of no interest to them due to its unconventional form. It’s a shame that the authorities feel threatened by this fresh approach. I know a lot of people who really love the music and would appreciate this stripped-down solo performance. I have so much respect for the music and lyrics from the original score and this was my way of honouring that.”

Shooting During Beyonce Concert

A number of crazy people reportedly opened fire outside of Beyonce’s concert last week. The youths involved began shooting at concert goers as they left the R&B singer’s show at the Parque de Exposicoes in Salvador, Brazil. Thankfully, none of Beyonce’s fans were injured during the terrifying incident. It leads one to question though, why would you shoot at random people? Do the people in Brazil hate Beyonce that much to want to scare music fans off? I highly doubt that. Again, it’s very fortunate that no one got hurt – Beyonce and fans alike. As a reminder to all, remember that violence is never the answer.

Ja Rule’s Gun Possession Case Still Going

Ja Rule has unsuccessfully tried to get his gun possession case dropped an now his lawyer says that they’re going to continue to fight the charges. The rapper’s argument was that the cops didn’t have a cause to search his car after a concert which resulted in the authorities finding an unlicensed handgun. The judge recently denied the motion but did say that Ja Rule admitting he had a little weed in his pocket at the scene will not be used against him. Gun possession charges are serious though and carry a mandatory minimum of 3 and a half years in jail. Ja Rule will next be in court on March 3.

Timbaland on Tour

Timbaland recently announced some details about his upcoming North American tour for ‘Shock Value II’ and it’s bound to be hot! The show is being pitched as a “visual and sonic extravaganza” and also boosts the rapper/producer performing with a slew of surprise live guests. Considering the set list, expect guests like Drake, Keri Hilson, DOE, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake. And in a cool twist of technology, other guests will appear via digital imagery projected onto a full-size screen. Some of those guests include the likes of Katy Perry and Brandy. It is going to be a hot show indeed!

Lil Wayne’s Last Performance

Lily Wayne recently perfomred a farewell concert in his hometown of New Orleans to thank his fans, family and friends for their support before he heads off to prison. The rapper begins his one year sentence behind bars for a weapons possession charge on February 9th. Along with the show in New Orleans, Lil Wayne is also shcedules to play a couple of dates in Texas and one other show in Louisiana. I think he’s getting a bit too close to Mexico with those shows. Someone better be keeping an eye on him. You never know what he could do.

Kid Cudi Kicked Off Tour

If you have tickets to Lady Gaga’s The Monster Ball, you no longer have to worry about Kid Cudi’s fists flying at you as the rapper has suddenly been given the boot from the tour. Interscope Records confirmed that the rapper is no longer with the tour. However, they wouldn’t say if his removal was over the video that showed him punching a fan in the face while performing in Vancouver. I’m willing to bet that it’s the real reason for the boot. The fan that Kid Cudi hit said that he wouldn’t be pressing charges but I think being dropped from Lady Gaga’s tour is a lot worse than a lawsuit.

Kid Cudi Not Facing Charges

Michael Sharpe, the guy whose face ended up meeting Kid Cudi’s fist at a Vancouver concert over the weekend, will not be pressing any charges against the rapper. Talk about a lucky break! The rapper apparently got pissed after a wallet was thrown on stage, which set him off, leading him to jump off the stage and throw a punch at the wrong person. Michael seems to have a sense of humor regarding the incident saying “I’m not upset, I’m not going to be that person. I just want to meet him and be like ‘I’m the guy you punched.’ I’m not going to press charges.”

Busta Rhymes’ assault money

The rapper recently had to pay 75 thousand dollars to a certain Alex Reid who claims he was hit by a bottle thrown by Busta Rhymes. Apparently this whole thing happened because Alex Reid wasn’t at a show to see Busta Rhymes, but another rapper and this sparked a bit of animosity between the two… especially from Busta Rhymes’ behalf. Well, this is one way to try and make fans… and probably lose the respect of the fan base in general. But hey, just wait until we’re a tribal society again… then Busta Rhymes is going to have a very big fan base.

Rihanna Talks Estranged Father

Rihanna and her dad haven’t been in contact for about a year and the singer revealed that she’s tried to get in touch, only to get no response. When reports surfaced recently that the Barbadian babe’s dad has been making efforts for a reconciliation, Rihanna said “That sounds very strange to me, seeing as I’ve been the one trying to reconcile with him forever…He has my number.” The two had a falling out after her dad got drunk while on tour with her and created an even larger gap when he spoke out to the media during the whole Chris Brown fiasco back in February.

Rihanna Performs Live

Rihanna’s comeback seems to be in full swing as the singer made a surprise appearance at Jay-Z’s concert at UCLA last Sunday. The performance marks the first time in a very long time that the Barbadian singer sang live. And mind you, she sounded absolutely amazing. Rihanna took the stage just in time for her collaboration with the rapper on ‘Run This Town’. Rihanna also had a solo performance of her new song ‘Hard’. That should get her comeback going. I just think that she still needs to up the ante regarding her new music because her singles are mediocre at best.

Chris Brown Album Pushed

Despite his upcoming tour not being able to sell as many tickets as any of his camp would like, Chris Brown’s album ‘Graffiti’ is actually getting pushed for an earlier released. The R&B singer’s album is now going out on December 8th, a week before its original release date. The release is coming on the heels of his upcoming ‘Fan Appreciation Tour’ which kicks off on November 14 in Houston, Texas. Yeah, he should appreciate his fans that do go to see him in concert because it’s likely that there’s only just a few of them left. They should just leak his album altogether.

Chris Brown Gets Interview Too

To counteract Rihanna’s interview with Diane Sawyer, Chris Brown also took the time to tell his own side of the story with MTV’s Sway. During the interview, the R&B singer talks about the struggle to adapt to the public’s new perception of him and how fans might react towards him at his concerts. Chris goes on to talk about his on-going anger management therapy, court-mandated weekly group sessions and his community labor sentence. He says that all of those things helped him evaluate his past behavior and express his feelings in his new songs. It’s not like anyone’s going to watch and buy whatever he has to say.

Chris Brown’s sales not so hot

It seems that the rapper’s recently planned “small shows for the fans”, with up to 2500 seats available, mind you, aren’t really attracting many of those fans Chris Brown claims to have. It seems that all of his upcoming shows for which tickets have been selling since last week are not filling up at all, not even those that have only 1000 seats. Things aren’t looking too good for Chris Brown right now… maybe he should try some new stunt with somebody else, get his publicity up and running a bit, see if he can in any way boost his popularity. It’s a pity for all those wonderful tickets to go to waste…

Fight Breaks Out at Akon Gig

While performing a concert in Melbourne, Australia earlier this week, Akon decided to leap into the crowd to stop a brawl that had broken out between rival gangs. The singer’s promoter talked about his heroic act, saying “One of the things people should take note on is an artist didn’t have too much concern for his own safety to go down and try and make things better. The thing that I saw, and I was standing right next to him … He walked to a girl (involved in a fight) and walked to her and held her face and said, ‘You’re better than that’.” 9 people were taken to the hospital following the fight and 6 have reported being assaulted.

U2 Concert to Stream Live on YouTube

U2 have confirmed via video blog that their sold-out concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, Sunday 25th October 2009 will be streamed free, in full and live on YouTube. It’s the first time a show of this size will be streamed live.

The Rose Bowl show is the penultimate U2 show this year – with more to come in 2010 – and already is set to host the venue’s biggest ever audience of over 96, 000 fans. The 360˚ Tour, which has been critically acclaimed and “re-invents rock’n’roll”*, will now boast unique access for fans worldwide – as fans in territories yet to be visited by the tour, or not at all, will be able to enjoy the whole show online. Managed in partnership with Live Nation, this sell-out tour has broken attendance records in most venues it has visited – its success due in part to increased capacity coupled with a lower ticket price and great sight lines afforded by the stunning in-the-round stage set. U2 manager Paul McGuinness said – “The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time. As we’re filming the LA show, it’s the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 – this time U2 can go to them, globally.”

YouTube will be streaming live across five continents. The show will be available in the usual You Tube way, as video-on-demand, following two full replays – after the live stream – on both U2.com and You Tube.

“YouTube is thrilled to be able to provide our global audience with a live streaming performance from one of the world’s greatest bands” – Chris Maxcy, Director of YouTube Partner Development. “We are always looking for new ways to connect fans around the world with their favourite artists, and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
