Michael Lynche wins the day

The ten remaining male finalists took their shots on American Idol last night, and it looks like Michael Lynche came out victorious out of the whole lot. It looks like his cover of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” by James Brown really hit the spot, even Simon Cowell thought so: “That was exactly the right kind of song for you.” Kara DioGuardi was of course the one to utter the biggest words: “You went from being a singer to someone who could potentially be a great artist.” The other judges weren’t far from her opinion either. Michael Lynche really sold it so he doesn’t have to worry about going home this week. The future, however is as of yet uncertain and the next disciple to the Earl of Exigency must be ready to face the many daunting tasks ahead.

Fantasia Wins an Award

Fantasia Barrino rocked the house when she performed at the Barbados Music Awards recently. The 25-year old American Idol season 3 champion took home the International Award of Excellence at the show. The singer also performed an hour long set including ‘Free Yourself’, ‘When I See You’ and even performed Barbados beauty Rihanna’s hit song ‘Umbrella’. Who knew that Fantasia could still book singing gigs, much less win awards for her music? How could she even win that award when she doesn’t have much to boast about excelling about? Either Barbados is way behind on the times or they couldn’t get anyone else to show up.

Simon Cowell Talks Idol Departure

It was recently announced that Simon Cowell will be leaving American Idol after this season and moving on to his next project, X Factor. Now, the snarky judge is speaking out about the kind of shocking, kind of not announcement saying “I’ve been doing this for nine years and it’s been a blast” but he felt that it was time to move on and focus his attention on one main show. Simon even got a little bit emotional as he said “It did feel a little bit emotional when I [made the announcement] because then it’s real… and then you remember all the good times you had.”

Mary J Blige on American Idol

Mary J. Blige will be meeting up with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi to be a guest host for the American Idol auditions in Atlanta. The show recently wrapped up auditions in Boston on Friday where Victoria Beckham also ended filling up for recently booted judge Paula Abdul. A source said “The judges and production team have been having a lot of fun with Victoria. She’s had a great response so far, and has been really warm with the contestants.” That’s not what I heard when they were in Denver. But I’m glad that she got replaced with Mary J. I think that she will be more honest in her judging.

LaToya Jackson Wants American Idol

Though she confirms that she was asked to perform on the show, LaToya Jackson won’t be appearing on Dancing with the Stars this season as the former singer says that she isn’t quite ready yet. LaToya said “I can’t see myself putting myself into there right now, dancing every single day when I’m still trying to find out what exactly happened to my brother. That’s the most important thing for me at this moment.” Though she doesn’t see dancing in her near future, LaToya does hope to be asked to be a judge on the upcoming season of American Idol. She said “I would love to be a judge on that show. I think I would do well with [Simon].”

Singer Sinitta starts formal divorce proceedings

Eighties pop singer Sinitta has confirmed that she is going through a divorce with her husband Andy, after they separated last year.

Sinitta, 42, revealed in November 2008 that she had split from her husband Andy Willner, 49, after he moved to Hong Kong six months earlier.

The couple have two adopted children, and she has now revealed they are starting divorce proceedings.

“It was never meant to end like this, but sometimes somebody does something and it disturbs you so much there is no option but to end it,” she said.

“It isn’t in either of us to be hostile or bitter. We were really happy for many years and when it was working, I loved being married,” she added.

Sinitta was American Idol star Simon Cowell’s on-off girlfriend for almost 20 years before she married Willner, and admitted the pop mogul has been there for her following her marriage split.

“He [Simon] has been amazing,” she said. “But I’m not surprised by that because we’ve known each other for so many years, and he always knows the right thing to say.”

Another Idol Becomes a Dreamgirl

One day you could be a nobody. The next day you could be on American Idol. And then all of a sudden, you find yourself starring in ‘Dreamgirls’. Unfortunately, I’m not talking about Jennifer Hudson. I’m actually talking about Syesha Mercado. Sources are saying that the season seven Idol alum has been cast in the upcoming international tour of ‘Dreamgirls’ the play, landing the role of Deena Jones, which was played by Beyonce in the movie. Could ‘Dreamgirls’ prove to be the big break that another American Idol has been looking for? If it worked for Jennifer, there’s no saying that it wouldn’t work for Syesha.

Kanye West Talks Kris Allen

Kanye West was recently asked what he thought about American Idol winner Kris Allen’s rendition of the rapper’s hit song ‘Heartless’. Kanye West said “I penetrate pop culture. I write Broadway-level melodies that transcend any genre.” Are you wondering where the comments on Kris went? Don’t say you’re surprised with his reply. This is Kanye West we are talking about after all. The rapper loves to think that the world revolves around him and that everything good in this world comes from him. Somebody really needs to knock this guy off his high horse and I don’t care who does it or how. Just do it!

Idol Stalker Sent to Jail

A 23-year old woman from Australia was just sentenced to two years in prison for cyber-stalking American Idol alum Diana DeGarmo. Tanya Maree Quattrocch has pleaded guilty to hacking into the singer’s MySpace account as well as intercepting emails from her friends and family. Why someone would decide to stalk a has-been, I don’t really know. What makes this even worse, or maybe more pathetic depending on how you look at it, is that this woman is a repeat offender. She has already served time for doing the exact same thing in 2006. Old habits die hard. Stupid ones should just stop though.

Queen Latifah’s New Music

Queen Latifah is about to release some new music soon. The rapper has actually released her first new single and has also performed it on American Idol. Surprisingly enough, there’s no rap! Not only is Latifah just straight-up singing on her new song, but the song also has a definite rock vibe. The song is called ‘Cue the Rain’ and I think it’s an amazing song for her. Congratulations to her for making a smooth crossover to a different genre! I can’t wait to hear more of her new sound! I wonder when her new album is going to get released.

Michael Johns to Perform on The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Former American Idol finalist, MICHAEL JOHNS will be performing his new single “Heart on My Sleeve” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Monday, May 25th. The Aussie vocalist will be releasing his first post-Idol solo album, Hold Back My Heart on June 23rd. Encouraged by his mentor David Foster, who invited Johns to appear on his star-studded David Foster And Friends PBS special in December 2008, Johns chose the road less traveled, and for the first time in his adult life, went to work on an album with no deal in place. “Foster always said that the secret of his success is to look at whatever lane is open in the music industry and take it,” Johns recalls. “And the way my record combines old and new, I could open for Alicia Keys one night and John Mayer the next, it’s right in the middle.” Songwriter Diane Warren, who penned the knee-buckling ballad “Heart Is Weak,” was another key endorsement. “There’s nothing more validating than having these heavyweights behind you,” says Johns. “It’s like screw winning American Idol when people like David Foster and Diane Warren are saying you have the real thing here.”

With an album completed and ready to turn in, Johns had the rare freedom to shop it around, and when Downtown Records, home to Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids and Santigold, showed interest in a licensing deal, he jumped at the opportunity to finally control his own fate. “I think we’re in the most exciting period of music ever, because there’s so many ways to do it,” he says. And like most of his plans thus far, Johns is thinking big for his future. “The live show is going to be great,” he says excitedly. “I might even take it old school with different bands in different towns — almost like what Chuck Berry and all those guys used to do.”

Tune in to see Michael Johns on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Monday, May 25th. Check your local listings for times.

Jamie Foxx Mentors American Idols

You know there’s something really wrong with American Idol when the best mentor they could get for jazz week, also known as Rat Pack week, is Jamie Foxx. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the guy, but I think they could have made a better choice in mentors. He’s not even a jazz singer for Pete’s sake! And that truly shows when he gave some pretty lame and off the mark comments. I think he’s the worst mentor they’ve had thus far – even worse than Quentin Tarantino for movie week. He got it right though when he said that if Kris Allen’s performance goes well, Jamie could go and make an album with him after the show is over.

Condensing American Idol

With American Idol running long for a couple of weeks, I’ve come across a funny idea of condensing the entire show down to just a 15-minute performance night. Minute 1 of performance nights will see the obligatory introductions of the judges and Ryan Seacrest. Mintue 2 sees the mentor of the week giving a speech on how everyone was instead of giving personal comments with no footage of them rehearsing. Minutes 3 and 4 will just be Adam Lambert blowing away the competition. Minute 5 will just be Simon’s comments. Minutes 6 and 7 will be Danny Gokey’s thing. Minute 8 will be Simon again. Minutes 9 to 12 will be highlights from the other remaining contestants. Minute 13 will be Simon giving his thoughts on the other contestants. Minute 14 will be Ryan giving out the numbers and minute 15 will be well wishes of good night with Kara saying “artistry”, Randy saying “dawg” and Paula babbling randomly.

Lil Rounds’ final rose

The American Idol contestant chose to interpret Bette Midler’s “The Rose” last night and even though her performance was not lacking in originality, it supposedly did not please the judges to the extent Lil Rounds might have hoped for. She tried to make the song into a very neatly evolving crescendo and succeeded, but let’s face it originality is not really that much of a quality any more, now is it? Simon Cowell gave Lil Rounds the same line he’s been supposedly giving her for a few weeks in a row now: “You are not the artist I believe we met several weeks ago.” Unfortunately for Lil Rounds it seems she never rose to the big guy’s expectations and this week it might prove to be fatal for her… unless somebody else doesn’t screw up big time.

Anoop Desai’s lucky break:

The American Idol contestant’s luck seems to be holding amazingly well. After almost being voted out last week, this week Anoop Desai dodges the bullet yet once more and obtains a mere 30000 votes more than Scott MacIntyre and this assured that Anoop Desai will sweat his ass off next week too… that is, if he doesn’t manage to come up with something good. No, make that something extraordinary because the charts are growing shorter and shorter and Adam Lambert doesn’t look like he’s going to be letting up too soon, nor do the others. Still, given Anoop Desai’s situation, I am reminded of old man Stalin’s voting principle: “It doesn’t matter what and how people chose to vote, but who counts the votes.” It gets the hinges a bit unstuck at times.

Flo Rida and Kellie Pickler to Perform on American Idol

I’ve mentioned that this week’s returning American Idol contestant will be Kellie Pickler but do you know who else is going to be performing at this night’s Idol elimination show? Rapper Flo Rida is also set to take on the stage as his appearance comes on the heels of heavy hitting guest performers such as Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone, Smokey Robinson and Lady Gaga. The rapper will perform his monster hit ‘Right Round’ from his debut album ‘Mail on Sunday’. Who do you think is going home tonight? After their performances last night, it seems like Lil Rounds is losing her steam and Scott MacIntyre is continuing to fade into the background.

Lady Gaga on American Idol

You have to give it up to Lady Gaga and her unique style that she showcased on American Idol. We’ve all seen our fair share of the fashion-forward, eccentric and down-right weird but Lady Gaga always manages to both shock and excite the crowd. There were so many things that went on in both the singer’s style and her performance of her number one single ‘Poker Face’ that I just don’t know where to start talking or what to talk about. One thing is for sure though, I am not going to be able to forget her performance for a good long while.

Ruben Studdard Suffers American Idol Curse

The whole country may now be suffering from a recession but did you know that the fallen American Idols got in on it before everyone else? It’s a curse. Like a few of his fellow alums, Ruben Studdard is facing some financial woes after being dropped by his record label. The velvet teddy bear owes $254,119 in federal taxes. Geez! I wonder how he let his debt get that big. Moreover, I wonder how he’s going to pay for it. Maybe Simon Cowell can step in and save him just like he allegedly did for Fantasia Barrino. Oh wait, don’t let Simon know that we know he is secretly sensitive. Nobody has to know!

Paula Abdul Blabs On – American Idol

paula-abdul.jpg

When Paula Abdul gets going when judging the contestants on American Idol, there’s absolutely no stopping her. The petite judge had a lot to say about the two songs that Jason Castro sung on the talent show on Tuesday night. It’s just too bad that he hadn’t gotten to perform his second song before Paula started judging him on it. Paula was in rare form that night as she blabbed on about Jason’s second song after only performing once. Simon, Randy and Ryan all tried to help Paula along but to no avail. She already dug her grave on that one.

Carrie Underwood Performs at CMT Awards

carrie-underwood.jpg

Carrie Underwood performed her hit single ‘All-American Girl’ on stage during the 2008 CMT Music Awards at the Curb Events Center at Belmont University on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee. The 26-year old American Idol champ closed the entire show in a cute baby blue baby doll dress. Single, dating or in a pretty serious relationship, Carrie looks really good and sings really well. Earlier that night on the red carpet, Carrie rocked a purple one strap mini. It looks like she’s still playing on the cute side of her image. But it’s Carrie Underwood – she always going to be cute!
